The Department of Mathematics, Miranda House witnessed verve and cheer as the students of the current batches came face-to-face with the alumni of the department, via the online platform. The event commenced at around 1 p.m on 18th September 2021, with welcoming wishes from Ms. Twisha Dixit and Ms. Aayushi Tomar, the General Secretary and Vice-President of the department respectively. This was followed by warm wishes from Dr. Daulti Verma, congratulating the students for their achievements in India as well as overseas.

The interaction began with Ms. Deeksha Ghai, sharing her experiences extending from the corridors of Miranda House to her established career as an analyst in Evolent Health. She emphasized the significance of enrolling in the ‘Placement cell’ of the college and exploring various opportunities, as well as shaping a germane LinkedIn profile. “Realise your potential” was a point that Ms. Ghai subsequently stressed. On the other hand, Ms. Garima Dahiya, currently a doctoral student at Tokyo Institute of Technology, stressed the importance of unearthing various career streams and discovering your interests at the earliest possible. By making a point of “Look in, Lookout”, she tried to simplify the idea of not only working on your own self but also looking at the relevant choices that the world offers!

While Ms. Aditi Sethia pressed on success not only being defined in a particular sense and that there is a door at each end of the world, she could give a crystal clear picture of how a student can make her way through all odds to pursue a robust career in the field she likes. Harshita Aggarwala, another alumnus settled in Germany as a data scientist in AWS made it very clear that there was no end to what mathematics as a subject could offer, and that to excel in a career, not only one but numerous skills need to be honed. Taking up a bit of research work and group activities can essentially fill the gap. Lastly, Ms. Himani Gupta took over the charge of galvanizing the students with her ambitious ideas. As was her advice to all that it didn’t really matter if one had a dream or not, what really does matter is to be “self-aware”. One could surely learn from her the skill of career planning and the relevance of backup plans.

Towards the end of the event, the alumni also took up the queries of the students of the current batches and guided them about the art of making the right choices! Finally, with a note on well-being and a prosperous future, the event was wrapped up by the President of the department, Ms. Manisha Kumari.
