With utter delight and high zeal, the Editorial Board of Sankhya- Department of Mathematics commences with its series of ‘Career in Focus’. In this series, we promise to present some career options that may be conducive for students to pursue after bachelors in mathematics. After vigorous study and extensive research, we bring to you this month’s career option, Operational Research, along with some related information.

What is Operations Research (OR)?

It is the study of applying mathematics to business issues. It has an intriguing position as a subfield of Applied Mathematics, alongside areas such as Data Science and Machine Learning.

It is also known as decision science or operations analysis.

Scope / Application of Operations Research

Operations Research study is associated with reducing complex business issues to well-defined mathematical structures and working out acceptable behavior and goals.

b. Quantitative Aptitude (65% weightage): It contains questions from Mathematics, Statistics, Operational Research, and Computer Science.

  • Interview (15% Weightage): Based on the performance in the written test, a consolidated merit list consisting of 3 times the number of seats available in each category for admission in each course would be prepared for the interview.
